TENTATIVE SCHEDULE FOR U.S. HISTORY: USE THIS AS YOUR GUIDE TO THE TRIMESTER

Unless otherwise noted, all tests and quizzes will be given on Thursday of each week. Please note that the dates below do not necessarily run Mon-Fri, but are usually separated by the end of an assessment period

March 28, 2001

Dear Parent of U.S. History student,

I am writing you this brief note to inform or remind you that your child will be taking the SAT II test in U.S. History on May 5, 2001 at Palmer Trinity. Our class has been preparing the entire school year for this test by learning the curriculum from the colonial era to the 1990's, taking practice exams and by working on test taking strategies. The last month and a half of preparation are critical as your son or daughter works toward their best effort on the exam.

Recently, the president of the University of California Richard Atkinson proposed dropping the regular SAT I (math and verbal test) in his school's admissions process. His proposal set off a wave a of discussion across college campuses nationwide. As a result of these discussions, the SAT II subject tests have emerged as viable college achievement indicators to some college admissions committees in lieu of the SAT I (Time, 12 March 18, 2001, p. 74-75).

Having said this, I would again like to reiterate the importance of your child's preparation for and participation in the exam on May 5, 2001. For your information, I have enclosed some of the important upcoming dates in this preparation below:

Tuesday April 12, 2001 65 minute periods

SAT II PRACTICE IN CLASS

Tuesday-Thursday May 1-3, 2001: AFTER SCHOOL REVIEW SESSIONS

Saturday May 5, 2001 EXAM AT PTS

Thank you for your attention to this matter with your child. Any encouragement you could give them as they prepare would go a long way toward their confidence and success.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Zavada

Instructor of History

TRIMESTER III PROJECT

As we prepare for the SATII/AP exam you should realize that time is of the essence. Class time is precious. Therefore, I plan to lecture/discuss course material for approximately 20 minutes per period on the time period of 1950-1970's during the next two weeks. The rest of the 25-30 minutes you will use for your trimester project.

The Trimester Project will be the main project grade you will have during Trimester III. Each of its parts will add up to most your Paper/project grade which is worth 30% of your overall grade for the trimester. We will have several deadlines throughout which you must meet to avoid penalty. The Project is broken down as follows:

PART I: Research Phase: 100 pts

You will be responsible for 10 sources and 40 notecards on your topic. Note cards and source cards may be computerized using a template or written out, however, they must utilize MLA formatting.

Sources:

4 must be primary source materials, i.e. speeches, interviews, govt. documents, films, etc.

3 must come from scholarly books, i.e. historians or political scientists writing about their field.

3 may come from internet sites which must be carefully scrutinized (I will provide you a sheet that will help you decide if the site is scholarly). Encarta and Encyclopedia type sources are not acceptable as documentation.

DUE DATE: MARCH 26

PART II: OUTLINE: 100 PTS

From your note cards you will build a detailed outline that you will use to construct your paper and your presentation. This will make it much easier for you to write your paper.

PART III: PRESENTATION: 200 PTS

You will complete a 10-15 minute presentation using PowerPoint, your own website or another media presentation you created before the class. In a sense you will be the class expert on the topic and will teach the class. This portion will be graded on content, speaking style, use of visuals (pictures, charts, tables, use of sound/video).

DUE DATE: PRESENTATIONS WILL START APRIL 19TH AND PARTICIPANTS WILL BE CHOSEN AT RANDOM. IF YOU ARE NOT PREPARED YOU WILL LOSE POINTS TO GO ON THE DAY CHOSEN YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY LOSE A LETTER GRADE.

PRESENTATIONS START DATE: APRIL 19

PART IV: PAPER: 200 PTS

After the AP exam we will work on the composition of the term paper. While your presentation will be a broad study of your topic, your paper will be a more in depth thesis-oriented study of a specific area of your topic. From your outline you will build your paper using MLA format, with parenthetical notation and a works cited page. See the MLA handbook and http://www.mla.org/ for help. Your paper should be 7 pages in length (. It should be double spaced (note: do not double space twice between paragraphs). Margins should be 1 inch around. The font should be 12 pt in times new roman. DO NOT TRY TO BE CUTE TO CUT DOWN ON THE WORDS ON A PAGE. I WILL MAKING SURE YOUR PAPERS MEET MLA STANDARDS.
